Recruitment Case Study - Corus

Corus Long Products is part of one of the world's largest metal producers The Corus Group that boasts an annual turnover of over £9 billion and major operating facilities in the U.K., the Netherlands, Germany, France, Norway, and Belgium.


The long products division alone employs over 11,000 people at several locations across the North.

Combining international expertise with local customer service, the Corus brand represents quality and strength.

The aim:

Primarily the aim was to demonstrate that online recruitment is a successful recruitment channel that ensures vacancies are exposed to the widest possible audience of suitable candidates. This includes drawing upon external expertise to help identify and utilise new and specific online job boards to increase the number of applications for specific roles.

In addition it was also a requirement to relieve the HR Service Centre of the increasing administration burden of potentially large numbers of irrelevant and unsuitable applicants.

What networx did:

  • As with all vacancies placed with networx, all Corus Long Products Division vacancies were advertised on at least 5 of the most appropriate job sites in order to target high volumes of candidates. Optimized for Internet advertising in a manner that ensured that adverts reached the widest range of suitable candidates possible, the adverts were live within just 2 working days removing the traditional press service delays.
  • Ensuring that all suitable candidates were given time to view the advert and apply, vacancies were run for 2 weeks in line with the optimum period for advertising vacancies and simultaneously conducting CV database searches to proactively identify candidates with the required skills who may not be checking the job sites on a regular basis.
  • In order to facilitate the management of the vast number of applicants that applied for advertised vacancies, networx also developed a bespoke application form that included role specific questions that helped highlight the most suitable candidates.
  • Acknowledging receipt of each and every application, candidates were then filtered by networx against chosen criteria. This allowed line managers to devote time on applicants who matched the required skill sets without having to sift through details of candidates who were irrelevant for the role. Finally, a personalised candidate update and decline service ensured that regardless of the number of applicants each and every candidate experience portrayed a positive and professional image of the company.

The results:

  • In just a 6-month period networx have advertised over 50 vacancies online
  • Over 850 initial graduate applications where received nationwide. Every application was acknowledged and informed regarding the status of their application throughout every stage of the process.
  • Vacancies filled include a full spectrum of vacancies including: HR Advisors, Maintenance engineers, Graduate positions, Production Planners, Continuous Improvement Coaches, Metallurgists, Engineering Managers, Shift Managers.
