Binnies are delighted to be expanding our team in the vibrant and historic City of Birmingham. You will get the opportunity to work on interesting and varied flood, coastal and maritime projects for our clients including the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales and local authorities.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to join a new team, where we can grow and develop our flood, coastal and maritime business together across the Midlands and further afield. We have numerous opportunities from graduate to principal positions with the position offered dependent on the applicants’ academic qualifications, any professional accreditation achieved and their skills and experience to date.

We undertake feasibility studies to select optimum solutions; prepare business cases to unlock funding; design cost-efficient schemes using the latest digital technologies; provide construction supervision and administrative support; and advise on how to best manage and extend the life of our clients’ assets.

You should be driven to develop and improve your technical skills and motivated to gain professional qualification with a Professional Organisation such as the Institute of Civil Engineers or Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management. In return we will provide access to senior mentors and role models in technical specialisms and who will support you to become Chartered. 

About the Role

  • Support our clients to manage the flood risk, water and coastal environment in a sustainable and innovative way
  • Produce flood risk assessments, strategies and plans, flood alleviation scheme design deliverables and business cases
  • Work in a high performance, friendly and supportive team environment to produce high quality deliverables
  • Mentor junior staff within project teams
  • Understand the scope of work and deliver work to the agreed cost and programme requirements
  • Adhere to required standards, best practice and Quality systems
  • Support senior staff to develop our flood and coastal business in the Midlands

Essential Requirements

The role is suitable for candidates with a background in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography, Water & Environmental Management or another related discipline.

You should possess and be able to demonstrate the following qualifications, skills and knowledge:

  • Degree qualified in a Science, Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science or related subject
  • Working towards Chartership with CIWEM, ICE or equivalent
  • Experience working in the environmental sector for consultancy, in contracting or the public sector
  • Understanding of project management principles and ability to deliver work to the agreed budget, programme and scope
  • Commercial awareness
  • An awareness of relevant legislation, policy drivers and working practises in the flood and coastal sector
  • For those with a geography/ science background: the ability to analyse and interpret flood and coastal datasets, identify key issues and challenges and create products for our clients, including flood risk assessment reports, business cases and strategies
  • For those with an engineering background: the ability to undertake feasibility assessments, optioneering and outline and detailed design packages of work and produce engineering calculations, specifications, drawings and business case reports. Awareness of site supervision work.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complicated technical information to our clients in a clear and transparent way.
  • Ability to work under time pressure and balance multiple priorities
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team of internal professionals, and third-party asset owners, stakeholders, technical officers and contractors
  • Creative and practical thinking to solve environmental challenges
  • An advanced level of computer literacy
  • Ability to travel to client offices and attend site visits

Desirable Requirements

  • Awareness of relevant legislation, policy drivers and working practises in the flood and coastal sector
  • Awareness of relevant health and safety legislation, including the CDM Regulations
  • Knowledge and ability to use AutoCad and/ or GIS
  • Experience working with flood and coastal risk management stakeholders
  • Experience of tendering for flood and coastal work
  • Awareness of flood hydrology and modelling methods
  • Experience of working on flood alleviation scheme projects at appraisal, outline design, detailed design and construction stages
  • Experience mentoring junior staff
  • Experience in business development
