The Role  

This is an exciting opportunity to join RADA’s dedicated Student Wellbeing team in a new post focused on providing specialist support for students with disabilities and specific learning differences (SpLDs), in addition to general advice to the wider student population.  

As part of a team of professional support staff, the postholder with work closely with the Head of Student Wellbeing, Deputy Registrar (Admissions and Student Services) and the Access and Participation Team to provide effective and integrated services to students and specialist advice to teaching staff.  The post is offered at 0.8 FTE, with some flexibility in the days and hours worked.   

RADA’s diverse student population includes a significant proportion of students with disabilities and additional learning needs. The Disability Coordinator and Student Advisor will assist students with Disabled Student Allowance applications and coordinate non-medical helpers, such as BSL interpretors, note takers, specialist mentors and study skills tutors. They will also work closely with Course Directors and other academic staff to identify and implement reasonable adjustments to RADA’s intensive training acivities and to build accessible and inclusive learning environments.   

We are seeking a friendly and approachable individual, with excellent communication skills, capable of building strong working relationships. The post is initially offered on a 12-month fixed term basis with the potential to extend to a longer-term appointment.  

 To be successful in this role you must have:  

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.  

  • Experience of working with young adults with disabilities and SpLDs preferably in Higher Education.   

  • Experience of liaising with external and internal parties about individual support requirements including funding.   

  • A thorough understanding of the impact of disability on the academic, social and personal life of students.   

  • Knowledge of Disability Student Allowance (DSA) application procedures   

  • Ability to develop appropriate strategies for study / training for students with SpLDs.   

  • Able to respond appropriately to students who present with sensitive issues, including appropriate referral to other services   

  • Have a strong commitment to practice informed by the principle
