Marine/coastal scientists - Senior to Associate Director

Binnies are looking to expand their marine and coastal capabilities to support our increasing portfolio of work across a range of sectors, including flood and coastal protection, ports and harbours, water utilities, and renewable power. These roles would also support our International Projects Team. 

You would be part of our friendly, multi-disciplinary, national Environmental Services Team, which includes specialists in other areas such as water quality, geomorphology, environmental economics, stakeholder engagement, EIA and ecology.

You would be very welcome in one of our offices (Redhill, Bradford on Avon, Birmingham, Exeter or Chester), but we are open to candidates from across the country and offer flexible or remote working.

Binnies is a registered Ecological (CIEEM) and Landscape Practice (Landscape Institute) and hold the IEMA EIA Quality Mark, which is a benchmark of our high standards in EIA delivery.

About the Role

We are currently seeking coastal/marine specialists of Senior Grade and above to provide technical leadership in these areas and to mentor and develop other members of the Team. The roles would include:

  • Marine and coastal ecology technical input for a wide range of marine and coastal projects, including EIA, HRA, WFD, and MCZ assessments and Marine Licence applications
  • Managing all stages of marine Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) including SEA, feasibility, screening/scoping, and Environmental Statement chapters;
  • Habitat and species identification (in-situ, from video etc.);
  • Undertaking and reviewing baseline and impact studies in line with international biodiversity standards;
  • Providing a mentoring/supervisory role to more junior members of our team;
  • Liaising and collaborating with project teams, subcontractors, clients, stakeholders, and the public; and
  • Supporting our Marine Business Development Director in business development and tenders, including bid responses, identification and pursuit of work opportunities, management of resources.


The role is suitable for a Marine/Coastal Science professional with full professional membership. You should possess and be able to demonstrate the following qualifications, skills and knowledge:

  • A recognised degree in marine science (e.g. marine biology, oceanography, ocean sciences) or a related biological or environmental discipline;
  • Chartered (or close to applying) with a relevant professional institute (e.g. CIWEM, IMarEST, IEMA, CIEEM);
  • Ability to provide technical advice and application of advanced scientific practices, theories and technologies for a diverse range of marine projects;
  • Working knowledge of the marine EIA process and undertaking associated assessments (HRA / WFD / MCZ) to established standards;
  • Specialist knowledge in one or more key areas including: international biodiversity performance standards, analysis of complex marine datasets, underwater sound impacts, the ecology of fish, marine mammals, or invertebrates, and marine survey design;
  • Design, procure (and potentially participate) in intertidal and subtidal surveys, data analysis and reporting;
  • Excellent written and oral communication;
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills;
  • Enjoy innovation and embracing advances in digital technology;
  • Hold a full UK driving licence.
