This is a Permanent, Full Time vacancy that will close in {x} days at {xx:xx} BST.

We are seeking someone with a proven dispute resolution background to add to our in-house team. The role will provide legal support to manage dispute/potential dispute related issues (pre-litigation), and largely on pension administration and actuarial matters.

You will act as an internal consultant- advising and working with people at all levels of our business. For that reason, it’s important that you are able to quickly build relationships and consensus, gain credibility and influence/constructively challenge others.

We would be happy for you to be based in our Edinburgh or Glasgow office (preferred) or London or Birmingham and we support a hybrid working approach (which includes flexibility to work from home for part of your week with a minimum 2 days/week in the office on average and flexible start/end times subject to certain core business hours).

Key responsibilities:

As part of our legal team, your day to day responsibilities will be to:

  • Provide pragmatic legal advice on any dispute/potential dispute related issues escalated to the legal team (whether in relation to the services we provide or disputes with suppliers or other third parties). This includes providing legal input where required on any complaints or potential complaints going through pension scheme Internal Dispute Resolution Procedures and/or involving the Pensions Ombudsman and/or Financial Ombudsman Service.
  • Provide legal advice on any data breaches- working with our Data Protection Officer, other members of the legal team and Data Breach Response Team as required.
  • Work closely with business stakeholders to understand the background to issues, direct investigations as required and provide clear recommendations for resolution.
  • Liaise with internal governance groups as required to highlight themes and trends, provide advice, recommend resolution, and build consensus.
  • Be the “go-to” person for certain internal teams (e.g. our third party administration Quality Assurance team).
  • Build relationships and work with external legal firms.
  • Provide notifications, updates, and reports to our insurers.
  • Prepare monthly finance reporting in relation to claims provisioning
  • Keep abreast of legal developments (e.g. in relation to legal privilege, Pensions Ombudsman or Financial Services Ombudsman guidance) and recommend and implement change to reflect such developments.
  • Draft best practice notes on topical issues for use across the firm, develop and maintain processes, policies, guidance, and templates and carry out training.
  • Identify and implement efficiencies in ways of working.
  • Support and help drive legal team initiatives.
  • Positively contribute to the legal team, creating a professional, effective, high quality and approachable resource for the business.

 

The Candidate:

To succeed in the role, you will be

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential:

  • A qualified Solicitor, experienced paralegal, or experienced legal executive in Scotland or England.
  • Relevant practice based and/or in-house experience in managing disputes, ideally in an FCA regulated environment or financial services or professional services firm.

Preferred:

  • Exposure to the pensions or wider financial services industry.
  • Experience of the Pensions Ombudsman/Financial Ombudsman Service.
  • Experience/knowledge of actuarial professional standards.
  • Experience/knowledge of FCA rules and requirements.
