An exciting opportunity for a rail, civil & structures bias Assistant Design Engineer to join an established and busy in house design team specialising in civil engineering projects in the rail sector.

 

Business Unit

Having secured a number of long term Frameworks with key clients, AmcoGiffen are further expanding our in-house Civil & Structural Design team.  We have a number of positions available at various levels for engineers who are committed to delivering the optimum design solution, building on their experience, and furthering their professional development.

 

The in-house design team consists of specialist’s designers responsible for design engineering on a variety of civils, rail and engineering project including CP6, asset management frameworks, Infrastructure projects and tendered rail / civils schemes.

 

Projects can typically include bridge re-construction/replacement, upgrades and refurbishments, station work (platforms etc.), access for all schemes, structures including bridges, tunnels and footbridges.

 

The Role

As Assistant Design Engineer you will have the responsibility for input into technical solutions within the team’s budgetary, programme and quality requirements, under the supervision of the Design Engineer’s and Senior Design Engineer’s.

 

To excel in this role, you will have previous experience in a design engineering environment working on civils and structures engineering projects (ideally rail but other civils project backgrounds will be carefully considered).  Your day to day role will include:

 

  • Comply with SHEQ policies and procedures, all legal requirements and best practice.
  • Be aware of the current CDM Regulations and ‘Safe by Design’ principles.
  • Apply personal knowledge and technical expertise to your work and to the standards required, by:
    • Taking personal responsibility for SHEQ standards in your role.
    • Encouraging others to work to the required CDM and SHEQ standards.
    • Maintaining personal knowledge of current technical and professional standards required to carry out specific tasks within your role.
  • Achieve the technical compliance of the design to the remit, by:
    • Working to the AmcoGiffen Design and Draughting Procedures.
    • Challenging and agreeing technical requirements of the remit.
    • Producing designs in compliance with industry standards and internal procedures.
    • Working to instructions or sketches to enable the production of unambiguous design to a high standard of accuracy in an appropriate format to agreed timescales.
    • Providing regular reports and forecasts for the project to the Project Leader.
    • Referencing, issuing, filing and archiving design deliverables in accordance with the Design Procedure.
  • Stay informed of design developments in H&S, Innovation, Sustainability and Diversity and implementing them as appropriate.
  • Understand the importance of achieving customer satisfaction by driving and maintaining the highest level of standards and working collaboratively.
  • Understand the social, cultural, global and environmental responsibilities of the professional Engineer and the need for sustainable development.
  • Developing organisational, communication, reporting and presentation skills.
  • Committed to the professional development of self.
  • Contribute to the achievement of the financial success on the project, by:
    • Maintaining timesheets on a daily basis and submitting to required timescales.
    • Developing, producing and maintaining documentation and records as required with a view to increasing overall efficiency.
    • Recognising financial risks, problem issues and potential overspends and reporting them to the Project Leader.
  • Navigation of Models:
    • Open, navigate, view object properties and measure in relevant model viewer, and turn layers/components on and off.
  • Information Management and Sharing in CDE:
    • Utilise key functions such as view, upload, download, search, edit and issue information within the relevant CDE software.
  • Use of 4D Sequencing Tools / 5D Cost Management:
    • Awareness of 4D/5D and their potential to be used.

 

Requirements

  • Degree qualified Civil Engineer
  • A good understanding of engineering principles.
  • Problem solving and decision making in line with level of responsibility.
  • Experience of working in a construction environment is advantageous.
  • Good problem solving skills.
  • Good literacy and mathematical skills.
  • Shows willingness to progress and learn from others.
  • Awareness of the design process, and engineering drawing practices.
