ABOUT THE ROLE

 

Liberty Speciality Steels currently have a fantastic opportunity for a Software Engineer to join our IT Department. This role is to be a member of a team of specialist software engineers to develop, enhance and maintain software systems to control and support manufacturing, technical and commercial operations of the steelmaking, rolling and processing operations of the business.

To undertake software developments through the full lifecycle of software projects from planning & design through coding & testing to maintenance & support, ensuring that these implemented to quality standards, timetable, budget and specification to the highest standard.

The jobholder may act as the primary systems engineer for one or more plant areas of the department’s portfolio of systems, as experience dictates.

To contribute to the Process Systems team in the development of technology to ensure continuous improvement of computer systems within the business.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Software Engineer is a key role within the function that is accountable for

  • To ensure that personnel directly under their control including both Speciality Steels and contractors operate within and comply with both Speciality Steels policy and statuary Health, Safety and Environmental legislation.
  • Work as directed by the Process Systems Manager or Lead Process Systems Engineers and to plan and deliver the work of the department and to achieve short and long-term goals of the wider business.
  • Work with Management in the specification and development of software to enhance the business operation, including the participation in project planning meetings as necessary.
  • Work as a member of a multi-disciplined team comprising manufacturing, engineering, technical and commercial functions to understand their processes and information requirements, advising on possible solutions.
  • Develop software for a number of approved schemes, ensuring they meet the required specification, integrating such schemes into the existing systems infrastructure.
  • Work with other personnel to transform business needs into system requirements, writing and working to specifications as necessary and ensuring all required authorisations and approvals are met before work is undertaken
  • Provide first line support to systems for which Process Systems has responsibility to ensure the 24/7 operation of the plant.
  • Participate in internal and external audits, whether directly relating to computer systems or to aspects of operations involving computer system usage as required by Speciality Steels or external accreditation bodies or customers.
  • Ensure allocated work is completed to department standards and is delivered on time and budget.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

Knowledge

  • Degree in Computer Science/Software Engineering or related technical field.
  • Oracle, SQL, Delphi, C#, Linux, MS Windows Server, Maven/Jenkins, PHP. The department also maintains a number of legacy systems (mainly Alpha/OpenVMS and Fortran).
  • Manufacturing environment.

Skills

  • Have strong analytical skills to understand the business requirements and design systems that will fully satisfy those requirements.
  • Have operate effectively as an individual and as a team member.
  • Have the ability to understanding how a proposed system will integrate into the overall IT structure and support the business.
  • Have excellent software development skills, the ability to develop to software standards.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Be self-motivated and dedicated to achieve the objectives set.
  • A clean driving license and willingness to travel to sites within Liberty Steels
