Our New Chief Executive

In these challenging times we are looking for a Chief Executive who will bring outstanding leadership, a depth of insight and experience and a range of practical skills to this very special role. The person we appoint will exhibit the commitment and tenacity to promote and achieve our vision and the energy and commitment to tackle a varied and demanding job.

That commitment will come from a personal passion both for conservation activities and for serving the wider community. Our new Chief Executive will have an enthusiasm for working with an equally passionate and committed team of staff and volunteers, including those on the Board of trustees. We all love the Hills and Commons and we are honoured to be serving the Trust, continuing the traditions established nearly140 years ago and adapting to 21st century challenges so that future generations can benefit too.

Alongside the challenges, working for the Trust also brings great opportunities and job satisfaction for our Chief Executive. This landscape is enjoyed by over 1 million visitors a year, with the positive work undertaken by the Trust being central to the appreciation and high regard in which it is held. Its accessibility and views have a positive influence on the health and wellbeing of those many people who live around and visit our land. As such our work helps improve their lives while at the same time caring for and enhancing our precious biodiversity and landscape.

Our new Chief Executive will be the principal enabler of our future success.

The Role

Our Chief Executive leads in the delivery of the Trust’s charitable purpose; to care for the Malvern Hills and Commons for the benefit of the public.

They play a vital role, working with trustees in shaping, planning and managing the long-term vision and strategy of the Trust as well as being accountable to the Board of trustees for the leadership, planning and management of all operational aspects of the organisation.

The Chief Executive acts as the figurehead of the Charity, building and fostering strong relationships with funders and donors, partners, the local community and wider public via the media and through the manner in which the Trust conducts its business.

While ensuring the delivery of the Trust’s statutory purposes our Chief Executive must be adept at managing multi-stakeholder interests in a complex and, at times, challenging environment.

Experience, Knowledge and Skills

Our new Chief Executive will have experience working at a senior level in a similar scale, not for profit organisation, managing multifunctional teams and multi-faceted projects to tight budgets and with a direct involvement in strategic and operational planning and delivery.

They will have knowledge of and a passion for land management, landscape, nature and environmental conservation and will have followed best practice and worked directly to relevant regulatory constraints. They will also need to manage the day to day operation of the Trust within all legal obligations that apply, including employment law, occupational health and safety, corporate compliance and financial management and reporting.

We will be looking for demonstrable skills in sound and motivational leadership and an exemplary work ethic from a person who is analytical, clear thinking, decisive and creative. We will expect persuasive advocacy and excellent communication skills and above all someone who is committed to the purpose and vision of the Trust and is prepared to get stuck in and deliver.

Malvern Hills Trust is the working name of Malvern Hills Conservators; we were established by an Act of Parliament in 1884 and are a charity registered with the Charity Commission. The Trust owns and manages almost 1,200 hectares of the Malvern Hills landscape.

Delivery of that vision accords with the charitable objects of the Trust. We are the stewards of this cherished part of the Nation’s natural heritage and it is our duty to conserve and enhance it. We are proud of what we do.

We protect and care for approximately 1,200 hectares (3,000 acres) of land , from open hilltops and wooded slopes to wide, tree-lined verges, lowland commons and suburban green space and we strive to manage this land for the benefit of wildlife, the commoners, the local community and the hundreds of thousands of people who visit the Hills each year.
