This role will lead the RCVS Academy function, which falls under the ‘Compassion’ strand of the Strategic Plan, as follows: 

Help our regulated professionals to meet the standards expected of them by their peers, the public and society at large by launching the RCVS Academy, which will house a range of online educational tools to help veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses and other potential associates of the College understand what is expected of them in terms of meeting standards, and to support them acquiring relevant knowledge and staying up to date in a creative, accessible and inspiring way.

 

Job purpose


Lead the Academy team to drive and deliver the strategy and ensure the Academy meets its objectives. Work with stakeholders to identify and prioritise projects responsive to strategic need. Evaluate data and feedback to deliver improvements and ensure the Academy remains fit for purpose.
 
The successful candidate will have the confidence and expertise to ensure that materials are engaging for our audiences, have clear learning outcomes and can be evaluated in terms of their impact. They will apply best practice in online learning and deliver multiple projects on time and on budget. The role will also support the development of internal learning and development for RCVS employees and council/committee members.

 


Key responsibilities

  1. Develop and lead an Academy strategy aligned with organisational values, strategy, and evidence-based learner needs.
     
  2. Lead and manage the Academy team to deliver the strategy and maintain operational processes. 
     
  3. Remain aligned with the latest learning and development principles and strive for best practice.
     
  4. Manage budgets and timetables for several projects concurrently.
     
  5. Work with the CEO, Senior Team and other stakeholders to continually develop a programme of learning through the RCVS Academy.
     
  6. Develop and facilitate collaborations with internal and external subject matter experts to develop innovative, engaging materials with clear learning outcomes.
     
  7. Foster strong relationships with College departments to identify requirements and ensure content accurately reflects learning outcomes using innovative solutions.
     
  8. Lead a measurable engagement strategy in collaboration with the Communications Team.
     
  9. Work with the Governance and Digital Team to host the materials in a way that meets best practice, minimises risk and adheres to policy and procedures.
     
  10. Ensure a quality assurance framework is in place that sustains high standards and compliance across the team.
     
  11. Lead and engage internal and external stakeholder groups that support Academy development and facilitate feedback.
     
  12. Ensure there’s a review process that promotes accuracy and relevance of learning materials. 
     
  13. Evaluate feedback, impact and identify areas for improvement.
     
  14. Implement key performance indicators that measure the success and impact of the RCVS Academy.
     
  15. Deliver updates to Council, Committees and external stakeholders on Academy activity and facilitate feedback and discussion.
     
  16. Participate and input into wider RCVS projects involving learning and development.

 

Essential Criteria-Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Experience of leading learning and development initiatives
     
  • Experience of people leadership
     
  • Experience of delivering digital learning, including demonstrable results
     
  • Experience within instructional design, presentation/graphical design and e-learning development
     
  • Experience of online learning platforms, including running massive open online courses
     
  • Understanding of online educational best practice
     
  • Experience of working with multiple stakeholders
     
  • Attention to detail, good proof-reading skills, excellent verbal and written communications skills
     
  • Experience of delivering multiple concurrent projects on time and on budget
     
  • Self-motivated, well-disciplined and able to work autonomously
     
  • Ability to make a cogent argument, and to inspire those around you
     
  • Flexible thinker and able to deal with uncertainty and incomplete information
     
  • Diplomacy, tact and resilience
     
  • Familiarity with all basic Microsoft Windows packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc)
     

 Desired Criteria-Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Qualification in learning and development / education
  • Experience of working in the veterinary or medical sectors
  • Experience of working in a regulator, professional body or Royal College
