The Role of the Quality Manager, Steel Making and Casting is to effectively manage, plan and co-ordinate all technical activities for LSS Steelmaking & Casting.
To provide a technical, metallurgical and quality assurance service to the production departments to ensure that product is processed to the agreed parameters to fully satisfy internal and customer ordered requirements. To investigate non-conformances and recommend corrective actions. To develop operational practices to achieve continuous improvement in quality and yield. To supply technical support to key strategic developments, including capital investment and R&D projects.

The Role of the Quality Manager Steel Making and Casting
 

  • Provide a technical and quality control service to ensure material is processed correctly and in the most effective manner within ACP.
  • Manage technical staff, including trainees, to develop and maintain the necessary skills and knowledge to support manufacturing operations to the required technical standard.
  • Define process routes and operational and quality procedures to ensure that customer ordered requirements are met whilst, optimising production.
  • Develop and maintain procedures / works instructions within the Business Management System to ensure conformance with applicable Quality Assurance standards, such that customer and other third-party accreditations are maintained.
  • Interrogate business systems to provide appropriate departmental K.P.Is, and product/process trends. Where required, initiate changes to standard process routes and procedures to improve their efficiency, to reduce customer concerns and reduce cost.
  • Determine the suitability of non-conforming product, and where necessary approve recovery routes/submission downstream.
  • Assess and appraise, to recognised QA standards, the suitability of suppliers to ensure product quality and supply.
  • Perform internal quality audits.
  • Participation in external audits – customer & accreditation bodies
  • Participate in all aspects of process development within the department including commissioning of new plant.
  • Initiate, plan, execute and report trials to improve manufacturing processes, reduce process costs/improve sold yield and improve product integrity and quality.
  • Liaise with outside inspection authorities and/or third-party and customer auditors.
  • The job exists to support the technical, metallurgical and QA requirements of the melting and casting areas.
  • The role is integral to achieving efficiency, improvement of processes and ensuring product is produced with repeatable product integrity whilst ensuring that product quality requirements are satisfied, and customer specifications are met.
  •  It contributes to through-process quality by liaising with downstream departments to understand the effect of processing upon NDT inspection and mechanical testing results.
  • The role requires knowledge of the fundamentals of metallurgy and an understanding of customer specifications, encompassing carbon, high alloy, stainless and tool steels which are produced for multiple applications including safety critical sectors.
     

Requirements of the Quality Manager Steel Making and Casting

  • The jobholder must be self-motivated and requires strong communication and IT skills. He/she must be able to work either on his/her own and as manager of a technical team. The latter requires the ability to both motivate and delegate responsibilities.
  • A degree, or similar qualification, in metallurgy or materials science is preferred with 5 years relevant experience in similar or related functions. Extensive knowledge of steelmaking and casting is desirable.
  • Knowledge of statistical process control and quality tools is an essential requirement for the position.
  • The ability to communicate effectively in all methods of communication at all levels within the business as well as with customers, suppliers, hire workers and outside inspection authorities is a prerequisite.
  • It is essential that the jobholder has the ability to make sound, independent and timely technical decisions in the best interest of the business.

 

The Working Pattern of the Quality Manager Steel Making and Casting
 

  • The Working pattern is Monday to Friday 8am- 4pm
