We are recruiting for a Shift Team Leader based within Thrybergh at our site in Rotherham. Reporting to the Shift Engineer, the purpose of the role is to lead and direct the activities of a shift multi-disciplined team within the manufacturing unit, ensuring that plant operational targets, product quality, customer service and health & safety objectives are met.

This role is there to effectively maximise engineering availability to optimise unit production to meet annual plan objectives for the works. This has to be achieved to ensure customer satisfaction on delivery and profit levels of the business objectives.

The Role of the Shift Electrical Team Leader

Operating as a working member of the team, the position exists to support the Plant/Department Manager by leading and directing a shift including contractors as appropriate to ensure that plant production, operational and maintenance targets product quality and yield, optimum level of service and health and safety objectives are achieved. 

To carry out this role successfully, you will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

  • Manage the manufacturing process within the team area of responsibility to ensure that departmental objectives and targets are achieved.
  • Responsible for ensuring high standards of health & safety, motivating the team to continuously improve safety standards and practice and will identify and develop safety initiatives within the team.
  • Develop and initiate process improvements within the team.
  • Plan, organise and control the work of Team Members.
  • Ensure team resources are effectively organised, deployed and monitored, requesting and organising external resources as appropriate, to achieve plant targets and objectives.
  • Monitor Team Members’ performance and develop, implement and review appropriate training plans to ensure individual optimum performance.
  • Involved in the selection process for Team Members and can recommend individuals for promotion/further development.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of discipline and attendance and can implement the company grievance/disciplinary procedure to agreed limit of authority.
  • Ensure effective communications within the team and between other teams and responsible for the development and maintenance of team identity/motivation.
  • Will be the first point of contact for individual team members’ problems and queries and will ensure that appropriate issues are resolved to ensure the smooth operation of the team with minimum disruption.
  • In addition to the responsibilities associated with being an operating ‘Hands-On’ member of the team the Team leader will:
    • Be responsible for a designated area of plant/operations and determine ways of improving its performance and reliability.
    • Be responsible for the supervision of Team Members, i.e.
      • Wearing of protective clothing
      • Safe working procedures
      • Compilation of IR1 reports
      • Adherence to, and compliance with, standard operating procedures
      • Timekeeping and absenteeism
      • Manning up to agreed
    • The Team Leader will give, and record, verbal disciplinary warnings. Issues of greater severity will be dealt with by Shift or Day Management. However, in organisation structures where Shift Managers are not included, or in situations where the Shift Manager is not available, the Team Leader will deal with issues of gross misconduct and refer for disciplinary action to Day Management.
  • Carry out plant inspections, including condition monitoring and TPM techniques, to an agreed frequency, these will determine future maintenance requirements.
  • Develop and implement maintenance routines for all equipment.
  • Carry out planning duties (labour and materials requirements) for specific plant needs, which have been defined by Day Management.
  • Ensure availability of materials and spares for items of plant within their area of responsibility
  • Initiate and authorise all appropriate requisitions within agree limits.
  • Identify and organise ‘Critical Spares’.
  • Coordinate with and, where required, supervise the activities of other services and contractors, including the issue and cancellation of permits, danger notices and all other relevant safe working procedures.
  • Ensure that all computerised management and supervisory systems are fully utilised and participate fully in all forms of communications.
  • Deputise for Shift or Day Management as and when required, i.e. short-term and planned absence, subject to Department Agreements.
  • Prepare shift/day reports to the requirements of the department.
  • Identify and organise on-the-job training of the Team Members to the agreed requirements defined in the skills matrices.
  • Identify workloads for Shift Teams and delegate to Shift Team Leaders.
  • Responsible for workload planning and supervision of both Shift and Day Teams. 

Requirements of the Shift Electrical Team Leader

  • The job holder will preferably be educated and qualified with a suitable Level 3 Electrical Technology based qualification and / or a suitable time served electrical technology biased apprenticeship.
  • Good understanding of the appropriate plant/area operations, related processes and appropriate customer/service requirements.
  • Knowledge of the integrated iron and steelmaking process.
  • Effective communicator, with the ability to manage and motivate a multi-disciplined team.
  • Effective organisational and decision-making skills.

  • This is a shift role 12 days and nights.
