Role purpose

This role is pivotal in managing a diverse portfolio of P&I claims for owners and charterers, ensuring swift, cost-effective resolutions that meet Member needs. You will assist with strategy, provide expert guidance to the team, foster strong relationships with Members and brokers, and collaborate across departments to deliver exceptional service.

What will you be doing?

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Handling a high volume and variety of P&I claims for owners and charterers, ensuring timely and cost-effective resolutions.
  • Maintaining control over P&I claims strategy, incorporating input from external advisors as necessary.
  • Providing regular, accurate, and timely reporting to the Head of P&I Claims on claim developments.
  • Cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with Members and brokers, delivering exceptional service.
  • Collaborating closely with FD&D, Underwriting, and Loss Prevention teams on claims-related matters.
  • Supporting business development and networking efforts with Members and customers, both locally and globally.
  • Estimating and settling P&I claims promptly, ensuring compliance with guidelines and Member Terms of Entry.
  • Managing the appointment of external experts, overseeing claim recoveries, and ensuring effective communication with Members throughout the claims process.
  • Adhere to company-wide rules, policies, and procedures, demonstrating professionalism and contributing to claims initiatives and expertise groups.

About you

Skills/Qualifications/Experience

Essential

  • Degree (preferably in Law) OR equivalent (e.g. Master Mariners Certificate) OR experience gained handling claims in a P&I club or shipping company.
  • Understanding of the basics of P&I claims and the P&I insurance industry. 
  • Understanding of P&I Rules and integrated Claims Department Procedures 
  • IT proficiency
  • Good planning and organisational skills with the ability to cope with demanding workloads. 

Desirable

  • Willingness to undertake IG PANDIQ exams or read IG PANDIQ material where the material is relevant to the role. 
  • Basic knowledge of shipping terms and common ship operations 
  • Basic knowledge and experience in dealing with P&I/Non-P&I matters.
