Workshop Instructor – White Goods Refurbishment

Are you hands-on, values-driven, and passionate about giving people a second chance? We’re looking for a Workshop Instructor to lead a purposeful prison-based workshop focused on refurbishing donated white goods such as fridges, freezers, and washing machines for reuse in the local community.

This is a workshop where practical skills meet real social impact. Prisoners gain valuable technical experience, contribute to sustainability, and support low-income households through access to affordable, refurbished appliances.

About the Role

You’ll oversee the day-to-day running of a busy, hands-on workshop, managing the refurbishment process from donation through to finished product. At the same time, you’ll supervise and support prisoners as they develop practical skills, grow in confidence, and work toward employment-readiness.

You’ll embed key employability behaviours through daily routines, support the delivery of vocational qualifications (such as warehousing where relevant), and ensure that workshop operations run smoothly, safely, and in line with prison protocols.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Induct prisoners into the workshop, providing guidance on safety, stock control, and the handling of tools and equipment.
  • Lead, motivate, and supervise the workshop team as they refurbish white goods for community use.
  • Set daily production targets and quality standards, ensuring refurbished items meet required checks before reuse or resale.
  • Promote a rehabilitative working environment using restorative practices and positive reinforcement.
  • Ensure full compliance with health, safety, and security procedures including risk assessments, tool control, and Level A/B searches.
  • Support employability development through the Employability Passport and, where relevant, deliver or assess warehousing qualifications.
  • Monitor attendance and productivity, keeping accurate records and contributing to prisoner case reports as needed.
  • Collaborate with Work & Skills Coaches and other prison staff to ensure joined-up support for each individual’s development.

What We’re Looking For

We’d like to hear from you if you have:

  • Experience in maintenance, repair, warehousing, or a related technical field—ideally involving white goods or electrical appliances.
  • The ability to manage people and maintain structure in a busy work environment.
  • A strong understanding of health and safety in a workshop setting.
  • Good organisational skills to manage stock, workflows, and production targets.
  • A positive and collaborative attitude, with strong communication skills.
  • Awareness of prison security procedures, or a willingness to learn.

Experience in training or assessing vocational qualifications is a bonus, but not essential we’ll support the right person to develop these skills.

Why This Role Matters

This is more than just a workshop it’s a project with real social value. Every refurbished appliance reduces waste, supports a household in need, and helps someone inside build a better future on release.
