Support Your Local Community as a Sales Assistant Volunteer

Every purchase made in our charity shops helps fund specialist hospice care for local people and those important to them. As a Retail Assistant Volunteer, you'll play an important role in creating a welcoming shopping experience while helping to raise vital funds for Ashgate Hospice.

Whether you enjoy meeting people, organising stock or creating eye-catching displays, we'll provide all the training and support you need. No previous retail experience is necessary – just enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to get involved.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Retail Assistant Volunteer, you may support with a range of activities, including:

  • Offering a warm, friendly welcome to customers
  • Serving at the till and helping with simple customer enquiries
  • Sorting and preparing donated items for sale
  • Pricing stock and attaching labels
  • Replenishing shelves and creating attractive displays
  • Steaming, folding and hanging clothing
  • Rotating stock and replenishing the shop floor
  • Helping to keep the shop clean, tidy and well organised

We'll work with you to make sure you're comfortable and confident in the tasks you undertake.

Time Commitment

  • Flexible volunteering to fit around your availability
  • Flexible shifts arranged with you
  • Ideally one morning or afternoon each week (even a few hours can make a real difference)

Who We’re Looking For

We'd love to hear from you if you:

  • Enjoy meeting and helping people
  • Have good communication and customer service skills
  • Are reliable and able to offer a regular volunteering commitment where possible
  • Will let us know if you're unable to attend a planned volunteering session
  • Understand the importance of representing Ashgate Hospice positively within the local community
  • Are happy to work as part of a friendly team
  • Are willing to learn and follow guidance and training

No previous retail experience is required, as full training and ongoing support will be provided.

  • Volunteers must be aged 14 or over
  • All volunteers are required to attend:
    • Voluntary Statutory Training (3 hours)
    • Ashgate Hospice Volunteer Induction (3 hours)
