This is a Permanent, Full Time vacancy that will close in {x} days at {xx:xx} BST.

Are you calm under pressure, compassionate, and committed to supporting young people? Join YMCA Chiltern Group as a Young Persons Accommodation Night Worker and play a vital role in creating a safe, welcoming environment for 18–30 year-olds. Working overnight, you’ll ensure the safety and security of our housing services while offering reassurance and support to residents facing challenges such as homelessness, mental health issues, or difficult life transitions.

Your presence will bring stability during the night, helping young people feel safe and supported as they work towards brighter futures. As a Young Persons Accommodation Night Worker, you’ll be a key presence in the building overnight ensuring the safety, wellbeing, and comfort of our residents. You’ll respond to incidents, offer practical support, and help maintain a peaceful, respectful atmosphere. Your work will directly contribute to helping young people feel secure, supported, and empowered to thrive.

What we’re looking for

• Experience of working with young people with complex needs, although not necessarily in a housing context

• Strong interpersonal skills, able to build rapport and engage with a diverse range of individuals

 • Good organisational abilities, capable of managing a range of tasks while remaining calm under pressure

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate as part of a team

• A positive, confident approach to managing challenging behaviour

• A solid understanding of current mental health issues and the ability to support young people in a sensitive, empathetic manner.

This is a waking night role, meaning you'll be actively involved and present throughout your shift, rather than a traditional night worker role where rest periods might be expected. As a Young Persons Accommodation Night Worker, you’ll be working in a house / hostel setting, helping to ensure the safety, security, and wellbeing of our residents and the site itself. Many of the people we support face complex challenges such as homelessness, mental health issues, or substance use. Your calm and supportive presence will make a real difference overnight responding to situations as they arise, monitoring the security of the building, and helping to maintain a safe, welcoming environment for everyone. If this sounds like you, we would love to hear from you and welcome your application. Join us at YMCA Chiltern Group and help provide safety, support, and stability overnight, making a lasting difference in the lives of young people!

This is a permanent role.

One YMCA and its subsidiaries, the Early Childhood Partnership (ECP) and Signpost are on an exciting journey to double our impact by 2025. We are over half way through an exciting new strategy launched in the first hour of the new decade, via email where all staff and volunteers were invited to put themselves forward to apply and attend an intensive, three-day Kickstarter Event.

By the end of these three days, there was a brilliantly multi-faceted set of themes and ideas, which formed the starting point for the rest of the Mission 25 process to build on. The aim of Mission 25 is to give every staff member and volunteer the opportunity to play their part in shaping the strategy to do “more and better, together” so that we double our impact by 2025. We deliver a vast array of services across Herts, Beds and Bucks that reach over 135,000 individuals annually.

These include:

  • Provision of over 700 units of accommodation for homeless people
  • Move on accommodation for individuals moving onto independent living
  • Housing and practical/emotional support for young asylum seekers
  • Community HUBs hosting a range of activities and meeting space hire
  • Childcare provision in Hertfordshire
  • Family support through a network of children’s and family centres covering Hertfordshire and Bedford
  • Therapeutic and non-therapeutic support for male and female victims of domestic abuse and their children
  • Independent sexual violence services across Bedfordshire, Luton and Hertfordshire
  • Domestic abuse perpetrator reform programmes across Bedfordshire
  • Youth services offering emotional wellbeing support and youth club opportunities for 11-19 year olds alongside our National Airplay programme funded by the RAF Benevolent Fund
  • A community gym where everyone can enjoy the benefits of physical exercise Our values remain at the forefront of how we operate as a charity, and it is important to us that all staff and volunteers can fully buy in to our ethos.

YMCA is a global movement that empowers communities and young people to build a just, sustainable, equitable and inclusive world. Founded over 160 years ago, the movement gave birth to basketball, volleyball, Father’s Day, and inner city hostels, and has grown to be the world’s largest youth organisation with over 50 million members in 121 countries.

"One YMCA" represents the movement in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, and is now one of the largest YMCA’s in Europe. Our focus is supporting vulnerable individuals and families to develop the skills and confidence they need to progress towards independence, so they are able to live their life to the full. Our approach is holistic and so we offer a wide range of services that include Housing, Community, Family Support, Youth and Children’s Activity Programmes, Early Years Education, and Specialist Therapeutic Support.

In the last five years, we have trebled our income to £40m, and more than doubled our colleague numbers to over 750. We are ambitious to continue to serve even more people and plan to grow our impact across our four counties, whilst also playing a growing role globally in what 14,000 other YMCAs are seeking to achieve globally through our shared 2030 Vision.
