Are you looking for a new challenge and the chance to work for one of the UK’s best-loved nature charities? Then we have an exciting opportunity for you. We are looking for someone to help bring about the recovery of nature; someone who has a deep understanding of the way our land is managed and is passionate about wildlife; is a great organiser and project manager; and is a confident and personable communicator to take people with you. We need you to develop a new service for the Wildlife Trusts – a coordinated land management advice service that links together hundreds of land advisors across England and Wales into a coherent force for nature’s recovery.
Who are we
The Wildlife Trusts are a grassroots movement of people from a wide range of backgrounds and all walks of life, who share a set of common beliefs. It has more than of 900,000 members, including 200,000 junior members, 38,000 volunteers and 2,800 staff across 46 locally independent Wildlife Trusts and the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT). We work in every part of the UK and also on Alderney and the Isle of Man. The movement’s central charity RSWT leads the development of the movement and represents the interests of the movement whenever a strong united voice is required. Together, the 46 Trusts and the central charity are known as The Wildlife Trusts.
About this role
The Wildlife Trusts work to a collective framework – Strategy 2030. At its heart is an ambition to see nature recover. This requires a farming system that works in harmony with wildlife. Land management advice is essential to achieve regenerative farming. Yet farming and land management is complex – buffeted by a bewildering set of agri-environment support, regulations and policies that all must be set in the context of operating successful long-term businesses. Getting advice is critical and Wildlife Trusts have long been giving advice to land managers though our network of land management advisors and environmental consultancies.
We run those services locally – bespoke and relevant to each local area. That makes sense as we can build strong relationships with land managers and are part of their community. But we also need to extend and deepen that advice to reflect both an agricultural sector that is having to rapidly transition because of the UK leaving the EU, as well as the urgency of the nature and climate crises. Coordinating those services allows us to scale up and improve our advice services. This post lies at the heart of that endeavour.
About you
You need to be highly organised and an adept project manager; able to both lead and serve the Wildlife Trust land management advice service community spread right across England and Wales. You will understand land management, especially farming, and will have knowledge and understanding of the opportunities available from agri-environment grants from Government to new green finance investments. You will be very comfortable using IT for reporting, for business plan development, and to communicate across a dispersed network for knowledge sharing. Above all, you’ll have boundless enthusiasm and passion for nature’s recovery.
