The Home

Ardmaine Care Home is warm and loving, located near the centre of the city of Newry. It has two units - General Nursing and Dementia Nursing. Ardmaine Care Home provides care for older people as well as those with Dementia, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Cancer, End of Life Care, Respite, Stroke, Epilepsy, Visual Impairment and Challenging Behaviours.

The Role

You will play a key role in ensuring the smooth and safe operation of the kitchen, guaranteeing that our residents receive high-quality meals and person-centred dining experiences. 

Working as part of the Kitchen team and reporting to the Chef, this role is about a lot more than preparing and serving meals – the Kitchen Assistant will support with ensuring the dietary needs of our residents are met in addition to contributing to a safe and positive working environment.

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist with food preparation tasks including cleaning and chopping ingredients, portioning ingredients and assembling menu items under direction from the Chef or Cook ensuring to meet to the dietary and nutritional requirements of the residents.
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards in the kitchen and dining areas, including washing dishes, sanitising surfaces, disposing of food waste in accordance with food safety regulations.
  • Assist with meal service activities such as setting tables, serving meals and assisting residents with dietary needs or mobility challenges.
  • Ensure that all kitchen stock and equipment is correctly stored and accounted for in accordance with the Food Standards Agency's Safe Catering policies and guidelines.
  • Work with the Kitchen team to maintain a clean and organised workspace including storage areas, refrigerators and cooking equipment to facilitate efficient workflow and minimise hazards.
  • Follow all health and safety policy and procedure, practicing proper hygiene and adhering to infection control measures.
  • Support the Chef and Cook in maintaining appropriate records and data in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Undertake any other duties that may be reasonably required as designated by the Chef or Cook.

You will need:

  • Right to work in the UK
  • A good standard of both verbal and written English.
  • Previous catering, kitchen or food preparation experience.
  • A flexible approach to work.
  • Be an excellent team player.
  • Experience in a care home or healthcare environment is desirable but not essential
  • Good knowledge of food safety and hygiene practices
