Rail / Civil Engineering

Location – York (Eastern Region)

An exciting opportunity for a P6 Project Planner to join an established and dynamic business unit based in the East region. The role involves supporting a diverse portfolio of rail infrastructure projects, including multidisciplinary works such as civils, buildings, and Access for All (AFA) schemes.

Business Unit
Our busy and fast-paced planning team manages projects at various stages of delivery across civil engineering sectors, including rail (bridges, embankments, stations, platforms, tunnels, etc.), Environment Agency projects, and Local Authority schemes. The regional planning team works on multidisciplinary civils projects throughout the North/Eastern region, covering both tendered and framework/contract work with key clients.

Current contracts include CP6 infrastructure projects, minor works, and Environment Agency frameworks, typically involving bridge reconstruction/replacement, upgrades, refurbishments, station works (including platforms and AFA schemes), and structures such as tunnels, footbridges, and bridges.

The Role
Due to the expansion of the Buildings & AFA portfolio (rail), we are seeking a P6 Project Planner to strengthen project delivery support and capability. The successful candidate will lead the planning of multiple schemes, reporting to the Principal Planner to ensure project performance and client reporting requirements are met. The role involves managing multidisciplinary design and construction activities, requiring regular on-site updates and collaboration with the delivery team. An understanding of contractual requirements and experience working with Project Managers, Quantity Surveyors, Contracts Managers, and commercial teams is essential.

As a P6 Planner, you will support the Senior Planner and Head of Planning in developing programmes utilising the rolling wave method, from design through to construction (ES3-8).

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the successful delivery of project programmes in line with planning standards and client expectations
  • Contributing to project risk registers
  • Developing and maintaining detailed design and build programmes using P6
  • Building strong communication channels with internal and external stakeholders to gather progress data for updates
  • Monitoring and updating programmes to reflect actual progress and changes
  • Providing regular project status reports, early warnings, and change management updates
  • Identifying resource, material, and plant requirements for procurement planning

Candidate Requirements
To succeed in this role, you will possess:

  • Proven experience as a P6 Project Planner within rail and civil engineering environments
  • Strong knowledge of Primavera P6 and the ability to mentor junior team members
  • Experience working with Network Rail, especially within the Eastern region, and familiarity with regional planning protocols
  • Civil engineering project experience, including site-based roles with an understanding of construction activities, timelines, and project requirements
  • NEC 4 contract experience (desirable)
  • A track record of delivering railway infrastructure projects
