Cambridge Environmental Assessments (CEA) is looking for a Regulatory Ecotoxicologist on a full-time or part-time, permanent basis. We are based in Boxworth, Cambridge however as the business has offices throughout the UK, we are happy to consider hybrid or fully remote working, depending on candidate preference.

As the Ecotoxicologist, you will join our established risk assessment team in delivering ecotoxicological risk assessments for plant protection products and other related chemicals, with an emphasis on higher tier solutions and novel approaches. CEA specialise in higher-tier risk assessments, developing novel solutions for complex risk assessment problems. For more information about CEA visit https://www.cea.adas.co.uk/

The majority of the work delivered by the regulatory risk assessment team is problem-solving, working with clients to address challenging issues that they are facing with their wildlife risk assessments where standard approaches are inappropriate or insufficient. We also undertake bespoke projects for clients, such as the preparation of manuscripts and opinion papers on particular topics. We also deliver some dossier projects, but these tend to be for active substances that we have been heavily involved with in terms of resolving aspects of the wildlife risk assessments.

Our projects range in size from being delivered mainly by one person to those being delivered by multiple experts, either within the regulatory ecotoxicology team, or across other CEA expert teams (aquatic ecotoxicity testing; efate and exposure; toxicology), or indeed with 3rd parties (contract research organisations, independent consultants, academics). There is the opportunity to take ownership of your own projects and manage them end to end.

We encourage our experts to develop client relationships and grow their network of contacts, through directly working with clients on projects, and also attending and presenting at external events e.g. SETAC. There is the opportunity to prepare journal articles, based on our own R&D work or in collaboration with clients. You can find examples of past presentations and journal articles in the CEA library.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as ecotoxicology risk assessment specialist for agrochemical and other projects, including the development and delivery of higher tier approaches for non-target organism risk assessments
  • Strive to keep up to date with technical and regulatory developments through self-led learning and attendance of relevant training events
  • Work together with other teams within CEA (e.g., efate and exposure, toxicology) where required on multidisciplinary projects

Person Specification

  • Extensive experience in regulatory ecotoxicology, either gained within industry, consultancy or a regulatory agency
  • In-depth experience in performing ecotoxicological risk assessments within the pesticide regulatory frameworks in the EU and GB
  • Good problem solving skills and a willingness to learn new approaches
  • Able to work on multiple projects
  • Strong communication skills and a team player
  • Good attention to detail

Salary and benefits

  • £40,000 - £60,000 (full time equivalent) per annum, depending on skills and experience
  • Life assurance
  • A flexible benefits programme including the option to buy additional holidays, health cash plan and discounted gym membership
