Location: Inverness

Salary: Starting salary of £38,570 during training. Following successful completion of training and assessment, the salary will increase to the qualified Train Person rate of £44,438.

About the role

We are recruiting 2 x Train Persons - the role is a brilliant "first step" for those with an aspiration to work in the railway environment, with a traditional path of progression to becoming a Train Driver.

We’re looking for motivated and safety-conscious individuals to join NTS Rail as Train Persons. This is an exciting opportunity to begin a career in rail operations, undertaking a comprehensive training programme that will equip you with the skills, knowledge and competencies required to become a qualified Train Person.

Working within our Rail Operations team, you’ll play a vital role in preparing trains, carrying out shunting activities, undertaking vehicle examinations and supporting the safe and reliable movement of freight services across the network.

This role offers a unique opportunity to join a safety-critical industry with full training provided and the chance to build a long-term career within rail operations.

What you’ll be doing

• Undertaking the NTS Train Person training programme and competency assessments
• Carrying out train preparation duties to support rail operations
• Performing shunting activities in depots, sidings and operational locations
• Conducting Traffic Examination duties on relevant rail vehicles
• Ensuring compliance with railway rules, operational procedures and company standards
• Working safely and maintaining high standards of housekeeping across operational environments
• Reviewing and acknowledging operational notices, publications and safety updates
• Using company technology and systems to complete operational tasks and records
• Participating in training, development and competence management activities
• Supporting the safe and efficient delivery of customer services
• Driving company vehicles where required as part of operational duties
• Promoting a positive safety culture and complying with all security requirements

Training & development

This role is designed to provide a structured entry route into rail operations.

• Personal Track Safety (PTS) training and competency development

Who we’re looking for

Experience

No previous rail experience is required.

We're looking for individuals who:

• Are motivated to learn and develop new skills
• Can work effectively as part of a team and independently
• Have a strong focus on safety and following procedures
• Can remain calm and focused in operational environments
• Are willing to work shifts, including nights, weekends and bank holidays

Knowledge

Desirable but not essential:

• Knowledge of the rail industry
• Understanding of freight operations
• Awareness of the NTS / DRS business

Full training will be provided.

Qualifications

Essential

• Good standard of English
• Good standard of Mathematics
• Valid UK Driving Licence
• Ability to meet the required railway medical standard
• Ability to attain Personal Track Safety (PTS) competency
• Ability to attain In-Service Vehicle Examination competency

Selection process

Successful candidates will be invited to attend an interview.

Candidates who are successful at interview will then be required to complete psychometric assessments as part of the recruitment process. Please note that psychometric testing takes place after the interview stage, not before.

Please note: Successful applicants must be able to obtain and maintain Security Check (SC) clearance and will be required to comply with all company safety, security and operational standards.
